As our lives seem to get busier and busier, it’s important not to lose sight of things that can help us stay happy and healthy. One of those things is taking some ‘me time’ once in a while.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we have to keep working and working in order to be productive, but the truth is that this will only lead to burnout, dissatisfaction, sickness, and perhaps even depression. In the end, taking a break and enjoying some me time is actually a much more productive thing to do because you’ll be refreshed and ready to keep working once you’re done, and probably in a much more efficient way than struggling on and on when you really need a break. Read on to find out more about why me time is important.
Reduces Stress And Anxiety
Me time means the time we intentionally set aside to do something like a hobby or something that helps us relax. It could be anything at all, from reading a book to going for a walk or even making use of medispa services like massage, a facial, or perhaps Botox.
What you do will be down to you, and as long as it helps you forget about whatever is making you feel rushed and overwhelmed, it will be doing a good job. Something else this me time can do is reduce stress and anxiety. This is because it will keep you distracted; your mind will be able to relax and not have to think about whatever is worrying you. It’s also because doing something you enjoy will release serotonin into the bloodstream, and this is a natural mood enhancer as well as a good way to combat cortisol (the stress hormone).
Improves Relationships
When we’re feeling overwhelmed and stressed and just too busy, it’s easy to take this frustration and worry out on those closest to us. We’ll be feeling irritated and upset, and snapping at any little thing becomes par for the course. This can have a seriously detrimental effect on relationships; even the most understanding of loved ones will find it hard to live with this if it goes on for too long.
By taking some me time and doing whatever it is you need to do to unwind, your relationships will improve. You’ll find that you are able to be a lot more civil, and you might even learn to stop and think before lashing out. Of course, ideally, you won’t be lashing out at all, but it can take a little while to reach that point.
Increases Productivity
When we are well-rested and have recharged thanks to taking some me time, we’ll be better equipped to handle any challenges that come our way. Something that would have been difficult to cope with without taking me time to help you relax and feel better won’t feel quite so bad once you have taken that time.
Sometimes it’s not the problems themselves that are the issue, but the way we look at them and the way we react to them. When you are happier and more relaxed, problems will always seem much smaller, and solutions will be easier to find.
