Neck pain can have a variety of causes. It could be the result of an injury, a cramp or a degenerative condition. Whilst chronic neck pain may not be curable, you may still be able to ease the discomfort and make it more manageable. Here are just a few steps to consider when helping to treat a painful neck.
See a doctor
If you haven’t already got a medical diagnosis and you suspect it to be more than a sprain, it could be worth seeing a doctor. This is particularly important if the pain was caused by an injury. A doctor will be able to find out exactly what’s causing the pain and may be able to prescribe medication to relieve the symptoms.
See a chiropractor
A doctor may recommend seeing a chiropractor in some cases where a trapped nerve or muscle spasms are to blame. Chiropractors use manipulations of muscles and joints to help get rid of pain. They may also be able to recommend stretches to do in your own time and help your neck recover. Check out these signs that you need to see a chiropractor provided by Fulk Chiropractic.
Give your neck a rest
In almost all cases, you’ll be advised to give your neck a rest. This could mean refraining from activities that require sharp neck movements such as sports or even driving. You may have to take a break from your job in order to recover. For many people this can be financially difficult, although you may be able to get some compensation from a legal claim if the injury was caused in a car accident. Dolman Law Group is a uber accident law firm that could come in handy for such a claim. In other cases where work is computer based, you may still be able to work from home.
Use hot and cold therapy
The heat and the cool can be used to treat neck pain. Cold therapy is often used for fresh neck injuries as a way of reducing the initial inflammation – this could simply involve placing an ice pack or a frozen bag of veggies on your neck for a couple minutes each day. For chronic pain and injuries that are more than a couple days old, you may want to move on to heat therapy such as having a hot bath or placing a warm towel on your neck – this will help to ease inflammation by loosening up tight muscles and getting the blood flowing.
Get a massage
A massage could help to further relax tight muscles in your neck, which could be making the pain worse. This could be a professional massage such as a sports massage, or it could simply be a standard massage.
Try acupuncture
A lot of people swear by acupuncture as an effective remedy against neck pain. This treatment involves placing tiny needles in pressure points. This is a type of treatment that should always be carried out by a qualified professional. Acupuncture Today offers more information on this procedure.

Neck pain is literally a pain in the… neck. Haha. Mine usually goes away after 4-5 days. It’s still too long. I just might go see a chiropractor one of these days. Thanks for the tip, Amber.

Thank you for telling us how important it is to see a doctor. I’m not going to devalue the idea of using natural remedies and I believe self-treatment is a good thing when symptoms are not very serious. But there’s a moment when a person shouldn’t continue to be treated on his own and should go for medical help.
